Shenandoah

A beautiful traditional love song that really shows what folkmusic is about, a simple song that has stayed known for hundreds of years, for no reason except it touches something in people that does not change. I can’t remember when I learned it, but I have sung it for as long as I remember, and still love to sing it, I can’t tell yuou why. Perhaps, like all love songs, it expresses the longing for this love I have never found, and I sing for her, wherever she is, through all space and time. Perhaps it is because of its simplicity and honesty, things I treasure. Perhaps it is memories of the Shenandoah Mountain, river, when I lived near the valley, next to the mountain, and the river there flowed into the Shenandoah. Or even the house I came to live in when we moved to the city, and I am living at now, so many years later, 1213 Shenandoah Rd. Perhaps because it epitomizes the folk songs that I have loved and sung all my life.
